Why would someone need compression socks?

The main culprit for someone needing to utilize compression socks is due to Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). CVI occurs when the venous wall and/or valves in the leg veins are not working effectively, making it difficult for the blood to return to the heart from the legs. Venous insufficiency is more common in women than in men. With over 50% of adults at risk of developing chronic venous disorders, it is important to recognize and manage the symptoms, as early diagnosis is critical.

Other risk factors that are associated with CVI include:

  • Spider veins, varicose veins or a family history of varicose veins
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Prolonged sitting or standing
  • Obesity
  • Long distance travel
  • Age over 40
  • Pregnancy
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Leg surgery or trauma

The most common symptoms of CVI:

  • edema of the legs, ankles or feet (swelling)
  • aching, throbbing or a feeling of heaviness and tightness in the legs
  • pain or cramps in the calves
  • dermatitis (skin problems)
  • itchy legs
  • weak legs
  • skin that is changing colour especially around the ankle
  • venous leg ulcers
  • vein issues (spider veins, varicose veins, phlebitis)
  • thickening of the skin on legs or ankles

The most common treatment for CVI and edema is prescription-wear graduated compression socks/stockings. Medical gradient graduated compression socks/ stockings improve venous and lymphatic blood flow. They are able to achieve this as they are designed to exert the greatest amount of compression at the ankle, and the level of compression gradually decreases up the garment. This gradient pressure helps to restore blood flow to its normal state, aiding in overall circulation. They are designed for ambulatory people and are manufactured under strict medical and technical specifications, including consistency and durability, to provide a specific level of ankle pressure and graduation of compression.

We carry the SIGVARIS brand of compression socks/stockings which are available for both males and females in a variety of compression lengths (calf, thigh, pantyhose), fibres (cotton, nylon, microfiber, merino wool), colors and styles. They are manufactured using premium double covered yarns for optimum comfort, durability, ease of donning and removal. They are also designed according to the Precise Fit Sizing© System which delivers precise and accurate graduated compression based upon the person’s leg and foot measurements. And lastly, remember that daily compliance is key – wearing compression socks/ stockings daily is crucial for them to be effective
